Nestling on the Northern bank of the River Lune some two miles to the west of the popular tourist venue of Kirkby Lonsdale and Devils Bridge and twenty miles or so to the East of Lancaster and Jct. 35 of the M6 Motorway. Whittington is a vibrant community, the birth place of William Sturgeon the pioneering inventor of the electro magnetic motor, who was born in Whittington in 1783 as well as the home of Rev. John Hodkins who was also famous as Cyclops, a contributor to The Motor Cycle News at the turn of the last century. Birthplace of Edward France, in 1694, who's sons John and William became famous as cabinet makers with Vile & Cobb and went on to supply furniture to the Royal family and many others. Recorded in the Doomsday Book with Parish Church records going back to 1538. A church has stood on the current site since 1200AD. The pages on this site enable visitors to find out more about the Village, our church and the activities which centre around our splendid Village Hall. |
