REOPENING of THE VILLAGE HALL - 04 NOVEMBER 2006

On Saturday 4th November 2006 refurbishing of the Village Hall was finally complete and at an opening ceremony performed by Alice Mackereth and Evelyn Pelter the ribbon was cut (by Alice) and a plaque unveiled (by Evelyn). Both Evelyn and Alice recalled their time in Whittington and some of the events which have occurred.

As Chairman of the Village Hall Committee Eric Pelter welcomed the many village folk who had come to see the results of the many months of work. Eric was also pleased to be able to thank those representatives of the organisations who's assistance in funding the project was an essential feature in the final outcome. As well as those members of the committee who provided exceptional input.

John Haston, Evelyn and Alice look at the plaque commemorating the original opening of the Village Hall by the Countess of Lichfield on the 9th May 1964. John was Chairman at that time and Alice and Evelyn where present at the opening. As usual tea was served, but this time from the new Kitchen. Wine and nibbles contributed to a day which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

BONFIRE IN WHITTINGTON

Once again the village bonfire, and Guy competition for the kids (and some grownups), was held in the Dragons Head field with barbecue and snacks in the carpark. A superb display of fireworks once again and, for once, the weather behaved itself.

OPEN GARDENS at WHITTINGTON HALL

Lord and Lady Reay opened the gardens at Whittington Hall, on Sunday 06 August, as part of the fund raising activities from which the refurbishment of the Village Hall benefited. Naturally those tea ladies were there again as visitors enjoyed relaxing on the croquet lawn.

Visitors were able to ramble the estate as well as the gardens and those who had not previously visited the Hall were able to view aspects that are not normally visible. In addition Jason the estate gamekeeper arranged a clay pigeon shoot which was enjoyed both by expert shooters as well as those (like the writer of these columns) who have not had the opportunity to try their skills in the past.

WHITTINGTON ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FAYRE

The annual Christmas Fayre was held in December and well attended. Thanks to all the people who manned the stalls and those who provided goods.
